“The gym is all the therapy you need.”
Brother I can’t even get the strength for hygiene.

“Have you tried working out?”
I can’t even go into work. (Lol)

So my
BPD
ADHD
Bipolar
Depression,
can be solved by lifting a dumbbell?

Sounds like “Have you tried not being sad?” 🙄
Unfortunately, science has sided with the gym bro… (kind of)

What Exercise Does to Your Brain?

When you exercise, your muscles are working but so is your brain.

Physical activity temporarily changes signaling involving dopamine and norepinephrine, chemicals important for attention, motivation and alertness.

It also increases endocannabinoid activity, which may contribute to the calmer, lighter feeling after exercise.

Then there is BDNF: (Brain Derived Neurotrophic Factor)
Think of BDNF as your brain’s repair technician.

It supports neuroplasticity the brain’s ability to strengthen connections, adapt and learn new patterns.

Exercise can also improve sleep, reduce chronic inflammation and help regulate the stress response system.

It does NOT magically delete your problems.
It improves your brain’s hardware for dealing with them.

ADHD: Give the Chaos Somewhere to Run

The ADHD brain often struggles with executive functions such as inhibition, working memory and shifting attention.

Exercise gives all that restless energy an assigned task instead of letting it open 37 mental apps and 5 songs playing from three different tabs.

A 2025 meta analysis of 16 studies involving 668 children and adolescents with ADHD found that aerobic exercise produced moderate improvements in inhibitory control, working memory and cognitive flexibility. The strongest programs generally involved consistent, moderate-to-vigorous activity—not one heroic workout followed by three months of spiritual recovery. Read the study.

Exercise is not an Adderall replacement.
But it can be a useful supporting app.

Depression: Movement Before Motivation

Depression tells you to wait until you feel motivated.
The problem is that motivation may be stuck in an endless loading screen.

Behavior can sometimes lead mood instead of waiting for mood to authorize behavior.

A major 2024 review of 218 randomized trials involving more than 14,000 participants found that walking, jogging, yoga and strength training reduced depressive symptoms.

Exercise appeared effective alone and alongside established treatment. Read the BMJ review.

You do not need to become a fitness influencer.

Bipolar: Helpful Tool, Not a Cure

For bipolar disorder, exercise may support depressive symptoms, daily functioning, sleep and quality of life but the evidence is less certain than it is for depression.

Reviews generally describe it as a promising complementary treatment, not a replacement for medication, therapy or psychiatric care. Read the systematic review.

Consistency matters.

During hypomania or mania, excessive workouts can become another expression of over activation.

If you suddenly feel compelled to train twice a day while sleeping four hours and planning your new empire, that is not necessarily discipline.

That may be a manic notification alert.

What About Anger?

Exercise can lower baseline stress and give physical agitation somewhere safe to go.
But anger is not poison you must violently “release.”

Research suggests that activities that reduce physiological arousal (Not like that pervert) slow breathing, yoga or calmer movement are more reliable for reducing anger than simply increasing arousal. Read the meta-analysis.

So…
Walk
Lift weights.
Dance badly.

Punch a bag if you enjoy it but do not rehearse the murder of your enemies between combinations.
Feel free to imagine it’s their face though. (LMAFO)

The goal is not to punish your body until your brain behaves.
It’s to move consistently enough that your nervous system becomes easier to live inside.

Annoyingly, the gym people were right. Just not about everything.
Annoying? Absolutely.

Useful? Also yes.

Loser Logging off.
Legend loading, begrudgingly.
